Legend says that Sati, Shiva’s consort consigned herself to the sacrificial fire when her father Daksha slighted her lord. In grief, Shiva danced the tandava using Sati’s dead body, until Vishnu cut it into bits scattering it throughout the land. It’s believed that Sati’s eyes, or naina landed at Nainital hence giving its name to the place.
According to historical records, Nainital was detected by a British sugar merchant named P. Barron. The merchant was enthralled by the lake settlement and its own forested surrounding that he came back having a sailing boat and built a house named Pilgrim’s Cottage. Hence started the process of settling this once secluded mountain resort, with colonial villas and promenades coming up quite rapidly. Shortly, it became an important administrative town as well, together with the summer capital of the United Provinces. In a disastrous landslide that destroyed several buildings such as the Victoria Hotel in the north end of the lake, torrential rains resulted in 1880. 150 individuals were trapped underneath the debris and expired. The area was later levelled out and became a favorite assembly ground and sports arena. Known as The Flats it’s now also used for parking vehicles in the peak tourist season.
