About Chakrata
Chakrata in Dehradun District of Uttaranchal State of India is a hill station and a famed tourist destination located at an altitude of about 7000 ft above the sea level. The town was known earlier as Jaunsar bawar, a small hamlet of Jaunsari tribe.Yamuna valley is located down the hilly town and the panoramic view of the surroundings from the hillock is astonishing. Chakrata was developed by the British rulers and was a summer retreat for the high executives of English East India Company. Presently Chakrata encloses military cantonment and the access is restricted here for civilian travelers.
Situated in a distance of 90 Kms as Cantonment town, Chakrata is blessed with natural beauty. The area formed part of the Raja of Sirmour’s territory and was defeated by the Gorkhas who were, in turn. Capt Birch made the initial resolution at Delhi in 181617 underneath the orders. Chakrata Cantonment is situated in the middle part of the tribal region of “Jaunsar Bawar”.
Chakrata Cantonment was established in 1869 by British Army Colonel Hume. Situated at 2135 mtes. In Nag Tibba ranges of the central ranges if the Himalayas on a wooded ridge of the Kailana range, it offers a spectacular view. While a portion of the town is a Cantonment for the Indian army( Establishment No. 22 ), the northern part of Chakrata is fascinating landscape for trekkers and nature lovers with its virgin of conifers, rhododendrons and oaks which are ideal for walks.
By Air
The closest airport to town is Jolly Grant about 115 kilo metes from the region. Jolly grant is a domestic airport well connected with Delhi airport. Delhi airport well linked with major cities in abroad as well and is an international airport. Tourist from outside the state can quickly get to the town via Delhi -Jolly grant to Chakrata.
Chandigarh and Delhi is well connected with Chakrata with regular flights. Taxis are offered at the airport to Chakrata covering a 3-hour distance. Which could bill around Rs should you hire a taxi. 2000 for one trip from Jolly grant airport.
By Train
The nearest railhead is found in Dehradun . The distance between Chakrata and railway station town is around 87 kilo meters. It’s easily accessible from Dehradun town. Buses and taxis are availed from Dehradun.
Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand State most of the well-known cities of the united states are frequent to Dehradun station. Especially, Mussoorie and Shatabdi express connect Dehradun to major cities of India. Railway networks join the town with such cities like, Howrah, Lucknow, Bombay, Varanasi, Delhi and Amritsar.
By Bus
Motorable roads join Chakrata with many cities in Uttarakhand and too. Buses are available from ISBT Kashmir Gate to Mussoorie and Chakrata. Buses from Dehradun district and Mussoorie may also be available to Chakrata.
Chakrata also well connected by roads with Himachal Pradesh. Chakrata is around 311 kilo meters 8 hours of traveling can cover the distance.
